The RE-MAIN project aims to improve the skills of VET students at European level in relation to the remote maintenance of industrial plants. In this field, the digital transformation has established (and enabled) that industrial facilities of all kinds need to implement several changes in order to survive in the medium and long term. Applying the principles of so-called Industry 4.0 to the maintenance of industrial plants is therefore a strategic tool that increases the competitiveness of companies and increasingly determines their survival in highly competitive markets. Previous training programmes in the field of industrial plant maintenance are characterized by a strongly classroom-oriented approach. Although this type of maintenance is still necessary in some cases, the industry is rapidly shifting to remote maintenance models thanks to the new technologies mentioned above.

The advent of the information society, improved telecommunications and the many possibilities offered by digital technologies have made it possible to move away from the classic response-based, on-site maintenance model towards new approaches based on remote, early warning and prevention that are also safer, more cost-effective, more environmentally friendly and more inclusive.

The project partnership is highly responsive to the needs of the industry and involves four highly specialized vocational training centers and universities that are leaders in their respective fields, as well as a long-established company that is highly specialized in industrial equipment and its latest trends. Together, these partners will research and develop training modules aimed at providing students with new skills and competencies in a way that meets the current and future needs of the industry.

The project addresses fundamental new changes in the training of maintenance staff in the industry and provides them with a range of skills that are critical to developing a career in modern industry.

RE-MAIN aims to address a significant lack of skills in remote maintenance of industrial equipment and provide training on variable monitoring, secure remote connection (cybersecurity), remote maintenance, remote maintenance of programs/functionalities and remote data collection and parameters, especially for the unemployed, people with disabilities or other vulnerable groups.

In addition, the participating institutions will benefit from the implementation of a joint pilot course together with other institutions at European level, which will help to improve their teaching methods and update their training courses, leading to an improved competence of the organizations. Based on the above and taking into account the needs of the sector, the general objectives of the project are to

  • to connect students with the tools, skills and current opportunities of the sector.
  • To design and implement a pilot course that takes into account the skills currently in demand by companies.
  • Laying the foundations for the sustainability of the course through initiatives by other training institutions in Europe
